Advising

Prior to starting study at Kansas State University, incoming freshmen and transfer students are encouraged to visit campus during the summer for advising and early enrollment.  The freshman advisors for that academic year complete all summer advising.  Each freshman is assigned to one of two freshmen advisors upon their arrival to campus.  Students keep the same academic advisor for their entire career at KSU.  In this way, any issues that arise affecting a certain class of students can be easily transmitted to them.

Upon arrival, transfer students are assigned to one of the two freshmen advisors as well.  If they choose to, they may transfer to the "sophomore advisor" or "junior advisor" depending upon their class standing.  Students can change to a different academic advisor at any time if they choose.

Undergraduate advising typically involves (a) overseeing that degree requirements are satisfied systematically; (b) assisting students in the structuring of a program of study over eight to ten semesters that accomplishes their academic and career goals; (c) assisting in the selection of elective courses; and (d) career guidance.

A faculty signature is required to initiate enrollment each semester.  Although students can now enroll electronically, they are blocked from doing so until the signature of a faculty advisor is obtained.  Once the faculty member has approved a schedule of classes or drop/add changes, the chemical engineering office staff removes the block.  The student then can proceed with the enrollment process.  The Student Affairs Office of the College of Engineering provides a graduation check during the students' last year of study.
