Professional Experience
Dr. Md Helal Uddin earned a bachelor’s degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 2007. Before starting his graduate study, Uddin worked as a process engineer in the chemical manufacturing and petroleum refining industries in Bangladesh from 2007 to 2011. He then earned master’s (2013) and doctorate (2016) degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno. Uddin worked as a postdoctoral associate in the department of mechanical and industrial engineering at the University of Minnesota, Duluth.

As a teaching assistant at the University of Nevada, Reno, Uddin taught fluid mechanics, transport phenomena, computer application in ChE, bioengineering, particle technology, and process control lab. He also taught heat and mass transfer and thermodynamics at the University of Minnesota, Duluth.

Research
Uddin has carried out research on a wide variety of topics including waste biomass to energy and chemicals production, CFD studies on combined heat and power production from renewable sources, and CO2 capture and sequestration. Additionally, Uddin has several years of hands-on experience in industry, ranging from small-scale basic chemical (e.g. NaOH, HCl, bleaching powder) production plants to thousands of gallons per day of crude oil refining process plants. This blended academic and industry experience drives his research on developing engineered processes, with a specific interest in waste biomass and solar energy processes, to produce cost-competitive sustainable clean energy and carbon-based materials for small- and large-scale industrial use.

Academic Highlights
Uddin authored and/or co-authored a book chapter, ten journal papers, and a conference paper, which, as of 2018, have resulted in more than 450 citations and an H-index of 8 according to Google Scholar. One of his doctorate works earned a U.S. patent in 2017.

Zn recognition of his research efforts, Uddin received the ‘Outstanding Student Researcher Award’ in 2016 from the University of Nevada, Reno. He also chaired and co-chaired several sessions at the American Society of Thermal and Fluids Engineers Conference 2018.
